The controls are simple to pick up, you walk over a ball to pick it up, and hold down the right trigger to lock the ball on an enemy and charge a throw, releasing it to throw. It’s important to note that these functions are purely cosmetic with no gameplay advantage, such as new outfits for your character, colourful taunts and MVP animations when you win a game, making Knockout City a game where skill truly matters. Progression comes in the form of levelling up, unlocking cool (albeit sometimes campy) cosmetic items to customize your brawler. To keep things fresh, there are many fun, recognizable game modes blended into the dodgeball formula such as Team KO (TDM game mode), Diamond Dash (Kill Confirmed), Face Off! (1v1) as well as innovative modes such as the highly chaotic Ball-Up mode where balls don’t spawn, and you can only throw your teammates. Every knockout gives your team a point, and in the traditional Team KO mode, the team that scores 10 knockouts first wins the round, in a best of three rounds format. In each game, every player has two “strikes” before they are knocked out and have to respawn. Gameplay is simple – think dodgeball with over-the-top acrobatics, add a variety of balls with special effects, played across dynamic maps each with their own unique elements, and you have a recipe for endless fun. Like Fortnite, it’s a game that’s truly cross platform, bringing together players from across PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and PS5 and Xbox Series X and S owners are also able to join in the fun with backwards compatibility. Hosted by 44 Bytes. With a neon Fortnite-esque art style and Splatoon-ish colours, Knockout City combines the right aesthetics with an easy-to-pick-up formula to become the next big multiplayer team game, if that is even a possibility. © 2022 Hookshot Media, partner of ReedPop. No idea why they don't just go straight free to play. The ammount of times EA has given this away in one way or another since launch is also weird af. It doesn't hold up to that though either. There's no running around and pressing lock on to throw dodge balls in what is ultimately a slow paced 3rd person shooter. To me rocket league is all about fluid, precise control mixed with hitting the ball at the right angles like pool shots, it's all about the physics. It doesn't need successful alternate modes (and hoops and drop shot in RL are great anyway). Rocket League feels like playing a legitimate sport. If I was a fan of the game I wouldn't compare it to Rocket League as it won't be a favourable comparison imo. Played it on Xbox with game pass when it came out. And the reward loop has gotten stronger, too: there are so many great cosmetics now – ranging from Mirror’s Edge’s Faith to Isaac Clarke’s helmet from Dead Space – and a lot can be unlocked for free, assuming you’re smart with your Bux. This variety, along with the core strength of the mechanics, makes Knockout City a game that you can keep coming back to. The studio has also toyed with other alternatives, like a Kill Confirmed-inspired event during Halloween where you had to collect candy. Where Psyonix has experimented with basketball, ice hockey, and even American football, the developer’s failed to find anything quite as entertaining as its core take on soccer.īut Velan Studios has done a much better job: the latest addition, Knockout Royale, is available for two weeks and sees eight players duking it out in a Battle Royale-style fiesta, which works astoundingly well. And to dwell on that Rocket League comparison for just a moment more, Knockout City does have an edge: its ever-evolving playlist of alternative modes.
